A historical thriller set in the aftermath of the Soviet invasion of Poland, The Gorky Resort (directed by Łukasz Palkowski, 2026) tells the story of Polish prisoners held by the NKVD in Kozelsk, shortly before the Katyn massacre.
The film brings particular attention to a frequently overlooked chapter of Katyn history: the Jewish officers of the Polish Army who shared the fate of their fellow Polish prisoners and were murdered by the Soviets.
One of the film’s important characters is Leon Sztein, a Jewish Polish officer portrayed by acclaimed actor Wojciech Mecwaldowski. The film gives unusual prominence to a Jewish victim of Katyn, presenting him not merely as a background figure but as a courageous Polish officer and one of the story’s heroes.
This aspect makes the film especially relevant, connecting the history of Katyn with the largely unknown story of Jewish soldiers and officers who served in the Polish Army and became victims of Soviet repression.
*Film is in Polish with some Russian, English, and French. English subtitles.
